Volunteer Tasks

FOSDEM offers a variety of roles for volunteers, both on-site and remote. Each role is essential to making FOSDEM run smoothly!

Setup & Teardown Tasks

These roles happen before and after the main event weekend:

• Van Loading (Thursday) - Load equipment into vans at Kortenberg office
• Buildup (Friday) - Help set up FOSDEM infrastructure and signage
• Signage - Put up and manage outdoor wayfinding signs around campus
• Cleanup (Sunday) - Help take down FOSDEM and restore the campus
• Van Unloading (Monday) - Unload equipment back at Kortenberg office

On-site Roles (Saturday & Sunday)

Devroom & Speaker Support

• Heralding - Introduce maintrack and keynote speakers and help keep those rooms running
• Lightning Talks Heralding - Introduce lightning talks and help keep the room running

Attendee Support

• Infodesk (onsite) - Answer questions, sell merchandise, be the friendly face of FOSDEM
• Cloakroom - Manage the coat & bag check service for attendees
• Runner - Be flexible and help wherever needed most urgently
• Food Courier - Deliver lunch orders to staff and volunteers who can’t leave their positions

Video Team

• Video Overview - Help record and livestream talks (technical role, special training)

Remote Roles

Can’t be in Brussels? You can still help!

• Infodesk (virtual) - Answer questions on Matrix from anywhere in the world

• Like working with people? → Infodesk or Heralding
• Prefer behind-the-scenes work? → Cloakroom, Runner, or Video
• Want variety? → Runner (every shift is different!)
• Can’t be there in person? → Virtual Infodesk
• Just want to help for a short time? → Signage (Friday only) or Lightning Talks Heralding
• Want the full FOSDEM experience? → Van Loading + Buildup + Event tasks + Cleanup + Van Unloading
