Cleanup

When: Sunday 16:00-21:30 (max 5.5 hours, one-time task)

Where: ULB Solbosch campus, coordinated from Infodesk K

Team size: 50+ volunteers

Timeline:

  • 16:00-17:30 - Initial cleanup begins
  • 17:30-20:00 - Main cleanup activities
  • 19:30-20:30 - Volunteer dinner
  • 20:30-21:30 - Final cleanup

Dismantle everything and restore the ULB campus to its original state after FOSDEM. It’s hard work after the event weekend, but essential and comes with a great team atmosphere and free food!

  • Physical fitness - lifting, carrying, walking for several hours
  • Good knowledge of English (spoken) for communication
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Flexibility - tasks may change as priorities shift
  • Team player attitude

You’ll be assigned tasks based on what’s needed. Examples include:

  • Taking down infodesks - dismantling tables, packing computers and merchandise
  • Video equipment teardown - carefully packing cables and recording equipment
  • Removing signage - taking down signs and markers
  • Cloakroom teardown - dismantling systems and returning items
  • Loading & transporting - carrying boxes and loading vans
  • General cleanup - removing furniture, sweeping, restoring spaces
  1. Arrive at Infodesk K around 16:00
  2. Check in and wear your volunteer t-shirt
  3. You’ll be assigned to a task or team
  4. Work under guidance of staff/experienced volunteers
  5. Tasks may change - stay flexible!
  6. Take breaks as needed
  7. Enjoy the volunteer dinner at 19:30-20:30
  8. Sign out and return any equipment before leaving
  • Lift properly - use your legs, not your back; ask for help with heavy items
  • Watch your step - cables, boxes, and uneven surfaces are tripping hazards
  • Take breaks - this is physical work; pace yourself
  • Stay aware - lots of activity happening at once
  • Watch for darkness - use flashlights as visibility decreases in the evening
  • Dress warmly - you may work outdoors in February
  • Wear gloves - we’ll provide gloves if you need them
  • Comfortable, practical clothing you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes (essential!)
  • Warm layers - you may be going in and out of buildings
  • Flashlight - for evening work
  • Personal phone - for Matrix communication if needed
  • Be part of restoring the ULB campus properly
  • Meet dedicated volunteers who stayed to help
  • Learn how FOSDEM works behind the scenes
  • Free food and dinner included
  • Huge satisfaction knowing you wrapped up properly
