Evacuation Plan

Evacuate immediately if:

  • You hear a fire alarm or evacuation alarm
  • A devroom manager, volunteer, staff member, or ULB security tells you to evacuate
  • You see or smell smoke or fire
  • There’s any other immediate danger
  1. Stop what you’re doing immediately
  2. Leave all belongings behind - do not stop to collect items
  3. Proceed quickly but calmly to the nearest emergency exit
    • Do not run, but move purposefully
    • Help others if you can, but don’t put yourself at risk
  4. Do NOT use elevators/lifts - use stairs only
  5. Close windows and doors behind you if safe to do so (helps contain fire)
  6. Follow exit signs - green signs with running figure icon
  7. Go to your designated evacuation point (see below)
  8. Wait for further instructions - do not re-enter until told it’s safe

As a volunteer, people may look to you for guidance:

  • Stay calm - your demeanor affects others
  • Help direct people to exits if you know where they are
  • Encourage calm, quick movement - no running or panic
  • Assist anyone who needs help (but don’t endanger yourself)
  • Report to staff once at the meeting point
  • Help keep people away from buildings at meeting points

Each building has a designated outdoor meeting point. Go to the meeting point for the building you’re evacuating from:

Meeting point: The food truck courtyard

  • Located between these buildings

Meeting point: The courtyard between AX and U buildings

  • Open courtyard area

Meeting point: The main car park between K, F, and J buildings

  • Large parking area

Two meeting points depending on which exit you use:

  • Rear Janson exit → The main car park between K, F, and J
  • Front Janson & J exit → The roadside (Avenue Franklin Roosevelt)

If you’re trapped or unable to evacuate:

  • Go to the nearest room with a window
  • Close the door, seal gaps with (wet) fabric if possible
  • Open the window and signal for help
  • Call emergency services: 112
  • Stay low if there’s smoke
  • Check Matrix #fosdem:fosdem.org and other social media channels for updates (when safe)
  • Follow instructions from emergency services and FOSDEM staff
  • Do not re-enter any buildings until it is declared safe

Remember: Your safety is the priority. Material possessions can be replaced - you cannot. When in doubt, evacuate and let emergency services handle it.
